reduction and empower of the poor people of the Tanguar Haor
(7,195.03 acres water body a world heritage), other beels,
haors and open water bodies of Bangladesh. |

Background:
Thairpur Upazila is a lowland haor-baor-beel area, backward
from the context of communication, education, safe water,
sanitation, health and housing. There is no road communication
with District head quarter Sunamgonj. Here the only communication
is through water transport, Internal road communication or
water transport communication is also very poor, time consuming
and expensive. Normally people use manually driven country
boat in the area. During dry season (4 months), communications
become too complex due to reduction of waterway. |

Development
activities in the area very poor. People are superstitious,
religiously conservative and have no regular sources of
income. Main professions of the people are agriculture and
fisheries. Losing planted crops are common in the area due
to flood/flash flood, or heavy rainfall. Natural disaster
is common in the area.
Some influential groups capture the water bodies such as
water-bodies under Tanguar Haor or other haors/beels. Access
to those public resources of the distressed and underprivileged
people are poor. They work there as day labourers in poor
wages @ Tk. 50.00 per day only.
Ethnic people like Garo, Hajong (total population around
11,000) are living at uttar Bongshi Kunda, Uttar Sreepur
and at Uttar Baradal Union. They are very vulnerable in
education, health, safe water and sanitation. Participation
in decision making process is also like subordinate.
Around 5,790 destitute women and child labourers are involved
in coal carrying, sand collection, stone collection etc.
They are not getting proper wages. They are deprived of
human rights also.
Gender discrimination is deeply rooted in the area. Society
is both hierarchical and partriarchal and women's status
within it is subordinate. Human rights of women, adolescents
and children are refused every day at home or at work place.
In 1997, around 47 youths of the area met in a meeting and
established Socio-Economic Development Association of Bangladesh
(SEDAB) and the first voluntary development initiative was
at Tahirpur to stand beside the poor to work for their taken
poverty reduction, and establishing social justice and human
rights. The organization was registered in the year 2000
with a general body of 11 members, headed by President of
the organization. Executive Committee meet once in a month.
If necessary, they meet in special meetings. |
